World Heritage Day 2015 Highlights – Pakistan and India

Today, on April 18, 2015, World Heritage Day is being celebrated globally. UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization dedicated 18 April to observe as International Day for Monuments and Sites in the year 1983. The aim to celebrate this international day is to create an awareness about the heritage sites in the world, historical monuments, their weakening conditions and steps and activities being taken to protect them. The day is known as World Heritage Day as well as International Day for Monuments and Sites.

Every year different countries celebrate the day by arranging different activities like seminars, walks, awareness programs, trips to heritage sites etc. Let’s see how World Heritage Day is being celebrated in India and Pakistan.

In India

* Delhi - A ‘Heritage Walk’ has been organized by the Metro Adventure Club (MAC) to celebrate the World Heritage Day 2015. The walk has been organized by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in order to highlight the historical heritage and sports and adventure activities. The walk is to cover Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Paranthe Wali Gali.

* Chandigarh - Different activities have been planned for the day which will begin with a treasure hunt. It will start from Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10, Chandigarh at 7:30 am and finish at Trench of Contemplation.

An Art competition has also been held at Open Hand monument in order to promote the Capitol Complex. People from all walks of life can participate in the competition (9:00 am to 11:00 am) April 18, 2015.

At 4:00 pm a quiz program regarding the “Heritage of Chandigarh” is to be conducted at Capitol Complex.

In Pakistan

* Karachi - Standard Chartered Bank Pakistan has organized the activities to mark the day on Friday April 17, 2015, according to a press release issued by the institution.
